So you want to go on a vacation? Maybe the trip of a lifetime to Italy, or maybe it’s only taking a drive a few states over. In my experience, no matter how far the trip, there are a few things you should do to ensure a good time:

- What Sounds Good?
This starts by deciding what kind of vacation you want. I’ve had vacations where I’ve just relaxed on a beach, and also where I have walked so much that I felt like I needed another vacation when I returned home. But I loved both types, and was really glad I went on both. Once you decide what type of vacation, think more specific: where can you find the activities you are looking for? Use this to narrow down the destination and do some precursory research to check where would be best.

- Research
This topic is huge for your trip. There is something to be said about traveling on the fly (I have certainly done this many times and loved it), but I would ALWAYS recommend research, even if it’s only very basic. You should look up what there is to do where you’re going; how long any activity is supposed to last, and the cost for any of it. Is there anything else you should know (dress code, advice on when to visit)?
Weather is an important thing to keep in mind. I have packed poorly for sooo many trips I’ve lost count. Don’t assume Mexico will be hot, California won’t have rain, or it won’t be snowing in the Grand Canyon in May (all learned from personal experiences). Look into the climate, but also maybe bring something to be ready for extremes.

- Finances
In your research, you should be able to find a good estimate of how much things will cost for the kind of trip you’re taking. With this information, you have to decide that this vacation is a priority! This means that you might have to make some sacrifices in your everyday spending: just remember that coffee (or wine) will taste much better in Italy! So now do some research and figure out how much you need to save so you can reach your goal and get on your way.
