The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah.
5/5 rating. 545 pages.
Book #26 of 2023. Read July 14, 2023.

This is an unbelievably amazing book about a family who moves to Alaska and not only has to fight to survive that unwelcoming climate, but figure out how to fight their own demons within their family.
Just, wow! This is one of the best books I’ve read in a really long time. I felt such a broad range of emotions so deeply reading this book that it was almost primal. I don’t know if I have ever despised and hated some character as much as Ernt Allbright, who deserves worse than a good kick in the teeth. I get knots in my stomach even thinking about him.
Meanwhile, @kristinhannahauthor made me sit there with tears rolling down my face reading parts of this book. She is an absolutely incredible author and I am going to have to go read her other books.
I can’t recommend this book enough!! I love, love, loved it!! Just be prepared, it’s a haul and hard to get through at points.
Quotes:
“She couldn’t tell Matthew this. Not this. Some fears you carried alone.”
“All this time, Dad had taught Leni how dangerous the outside world was. The truth was that the biggest danger of all was in her own home.”
“Neither one of them needed platitudes right now. What they needed was help.”
“They were trapped, by environment and finances, but mostly by the sick, twisted love that bound her parents together.”
“She learned things no book had ever taught her – how falling in love felt like an adventure,”
“‘I’m eighteen years old. Why would anyone listen to what I want? I know nothing,’ Leni said.”
“Kids are durable, and so is their love.”
“In that one image, Matthew saw the whole of his life; past, present, and future. It was one of those moments – an instant of grace in a crazy, sometimes impossibly dangerous world – that changed a man’s life.”
