Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel.

Book #3 of 2021. Read January 16, 2021.

2/5 rating.
This book is part cookbook, part love story, all strange.
This book follows the life of Tita, a Mexican girl who is doomed as the youngest daughter to a life without love and spent taking care of her mother until her death. Life has other plans for Tita, though, as she falls in love with Pedro.
This book might be considered mystical realism? Whatever it is, I didn’t necessarily dislike it until the ending where I just had to say “nope, I’m over it” as it solidified that this book was just too weird for me.
The best part about the book was this quote which I fully support: “When the talk turns to eating, a subject of the greatest importance, only fools and sick men don’t give it the attention it deserves.”
I will say that a lot of these recipes sounded phenomenal! But unless you are looking for some good Mexican recipes, you can skip this book.
Quotes:
“Having felt it with her own body, she knew a look could start a fire.”
