Two Percent Solutions for the Planet: 50 Low-Cost, Low-Tech, Nature-Based Practices for Combatting Hunger, Drought, and Climate Change by Courtney White.
3/5 rating. 214 pages.
Book #6 of 2021. Read January 20, 2021.

This book is a must-read for any farmer or gardener who is looking for ways to continue on in spite of climate change.
Courtney has compiled 50 different simple, cost-effective, and proven practices to be implemented. Each idea has 4 pages written about its efficacy, along with someone who is already using the technique.
These ideas together could truly change the world! Many of them deal with soil health, and natural ways of sequestering carbon. While there needs to be much more than just these practices implemented to reduce climate change, if a large swath of farmers and ranchers switched to using these practices – along with us as consumers supporting them in using these sometimes slower tools – we could make a huge dent in our need for more difficult, costlier, and potentially dangerous attempts at stopping climate change.
I would love to get this book into the hands of farmers everywhere as Courtney shows that as the soil and land becomes healthier (sequestering carbon as an added benefit), crops grow better, cattle are healthier, and farmers can make more money. In a world where it’s become nearly impossible to run a small farm, or not sell-out to the Monsanto’s of the world, Courtney gives us our best tool, right here!!
Quotes:
“How we treat animals not only speaks volumes about who we are as human beings, it says a lot about how we treat the natural world generally.”
“According to various studies, between 20 to 40 percent of all food served in America goes uneaten and winds up in a landfill. That’s approximately 83 billion pounds of food, or 270 pounds per person per year, worth at least $165 billion (in 2008 dollars).”
“As Nabhan and his coauthor Stephen Buchmann have calculated, one in every three bites of food consumed in the United States depends directly on insects for pollination, including apples, apricots, avocados, asparagus, broccoli, blueberries, carrots, celery, cherries, cucumbers, citrus, pumpkins, squash, watermelons, olives, pears, peaches, onions, raspberries, and sunflower seeds, and all sorts of nuts.”
“In nature, nothing exists in isolation.”
